In what was the weekend’s big match in the Premier League, Liverpool hosted reigning champions Manchester United at Anfield.
Liverpool bossed the game from the start with the opening goal coming in the 34th minute when Luis Suarez rounded two Man Utd defenders before slipping the ball into Dirk Kuyt to tap it home. Man Utd’s defenders were not having a good game and five minutes Liverpool made it two nil when Nani misheaded the ball to Kuyt who again scored from close range.
The Dutch forward scored his hat-trick on the 65th minute after Suarez’s freekick was spilled by Edwin van der Sar and Kuyt was on hand to fire the ball home. It was the first time a Liverpool player had scored a hat-trick against Man Utd since 1990.
Javier Hernandez pulled one back for the visitors late in the game but the day belonged to Liverpool and Dirk Kuyt, new signing Andy Carroll also made his debut for Liverpool which gave the Anfield crowd more to cheer about. Liverpool manager Kenny Daglish said after the game “It has been a difficult season for Liverpool – that has been the highlight, but we’re not finished yet. Everyone enjoyed the day and I think they deserved to win.”
Arsenal 0 Sunderland 0
Second place Arsenal missed the chance to close the gap further Man Utd after beind held to a scoreless draw by Sunderland on Saturday in The Emirates.
The London side will be frustrated that they stand three points behind their rivals after being denied the win by a mixture of poor refereeing and poor finishing. Andrey Arshavin had a goal wrongly dissallowed for offside and Arsenal were denied a penalty when Sunderland defender Titus Bramble pushed the forward in the box. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was disgusted by the referee decisions and made his feelings known in the post match interview.
